Travel From Zurich Airport

Travel by Train Zurich Airport

It's a 13-minute ride CHF5.40 (,3.50) from Zurich Airportto Zurich's Central Railway Station and less than five minutes to the industrial and conference centre of Oerlikon. Frequent metro- rail (S-Bahn) links serve neighbouring cities and Zurich's suburbs.

Travel by Bus or Coach

The hotel coach service drops you at any of 30 downtown hotels. Costs CHF22 (,14.30) per person.

Travel by Car

Expect a 15-minute ride off-peak to the central district but definitely more than twice that time during peak traffic jams. Experienced travellers take the train.

Travel by Taxi

Taxis are readily available from outside the airport terminals and cost around CHF40 (,26) into the centre of Zurich. Tel. 01 222 2222 or Tel. 01 444 4444.

Cheap & Cheerful (Around £10)

Lily's Stomach Supply (Langstrasse 197. Tel. 01 440 1885). One of the coolest hang-outs in Zuri- West. Modern lines and the best of Asian cuisine. Find everything from Sri Lankan to Pakistani specialities, all washed down with a nice selection of Japanese beers.

Around £20

La Salle (Schiffbauhaus, off Hardstrasse. Tel. 01 258 7071). Elegant dining in a glass cube set inside an old shipbuilding factory, now turned into a theatre complex. As for the food, it's outstanding modern European cuisine. Book ahead.

Special Occasions

Sala of Tokyo (Limmatstrasse 29. Tel. 01 271 5290). One of Switzerland's best Japanese restaurants. Prices are high but the food is excellent.

Exclusive Restaurants

Kronenhalle (Ramistrasse 4. Tel. 01 251 0256). Outstanding local delicacies surrounded by some of the finest works of modern art in town. The place to feast on Swiss sausage while appreciating the Picassos, Matisses and Braques that line the walls.

Public Houses (Pubs)

Pigalle (Marktgasse 14. Tel. 01 266 1618). Small bar but lots of atmosphere. An interesting mixed crowd.

Live Entertainment Music

Widder Bar (Widder Hotel, Rennweg 7. Tel. 01 224 2526). One of the chicest downtown locations for the coolest of piano bar jazz performers. Also has the largest selection of whisky on offer this side of the English Channel.

Nightspots Clubs Nightclubs

Dynamo (Wasserwerkstrasse 21. Tel. 01 365 3444). Hip and appealing to the alternative scene in Zurich. There are live acts on offer including everything from rock to drum 'n' bass. Labyrinth (Pfingstweidstrasse 70. Tel. 01 440 5984h). Where a mixed crowd gets together for in-your-face house music until the sun comes up.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Zurich

The Zuri-West district is the hip and happening soul of all that is cool in Zurich. This area behind the main railway station centres around the sometimes seedy Langstrasse and boasts the best of funky bars and fashionable eateries.
