Travel From Marseille Airport

Travel by Bus or Coach

The shuttle bus outside the airport's main entrance runs every 20 minutes from 6.30am- 9.50pm and will take you to Marseille's central railway and bus station, the gare SNCF St Charles. One-way tickets cost ,8.50.

Travel by Car

It takes 25 minutes to drive to the centre of Marseille, via the clearly indicated A55 autoroute.

Travel by Taxi

Fares during the day to the central city are around ,37, and ,46 at night.

Low Cost Cheap & Cheerful (Around a £10)

Tarte Julie (14 Avenue du Prado, 6th. Tel. 04 91 37 23 45). Take your pick from a vast array of savoury or sweet home-made quiches and flans in country- style kitchen surroundings. Good value whether you eat here or take away.

Around £20

Le Pavillon (Tel. 04 96 12 46 19). A large choice of fragrant Thai and Chinese dishes served in serene surroundings enhanced by bamboo and painted murals. The spring rolls and shrimp curry are a good bet.

Special Occasions

Le Souk (100 Quai du Port, 2nd. Tel. 04 91 91 29 29). The Moroccan speciality dish, the tajine (stew cooked in a conical dish), is highly recommended at this North African restaurant decked out with mosaic tables on the terrace and a discreetly lit interior. Reservations advised.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Marseille

Originally built as a shelter for the homeless, The Veille Charite (2 Rue de la Charite. Tel. 04 91 14 58 80) is now the beautiful setting for a thriving cultural centre, housing two museums (the Musee d'Archeologie Mediterraneenne and the Musee d'Arts Africains, Oceaniens, Amerindiens) and a pleasant cafe. The three-storey arcades in pale stone are built around a courtyard dominated by a glorious baroque-style chapel in the centre.
