Underground's line 8 (pink) links Barajas airport to the city centre (Nuevos Ministerios tube and suburban train station) in 12 minutes, www.metromadrid.es. Costs ,1.05 one way.

Travel by Bus or Coach

EMT's (Municipal Transport Company's) Airport Buses leave from Madrid Airportevery 10 minutes to Plaza Colan terminal (takes about 30 mins). costs ,2.40. Tel. +34 91 406 88 10. AEROCITY: Private shuttle bus service between the airport and downtown hotels. www.aerocity.com.

Travel by Taxi

Low Cost Cheap & Cheerful (Around a £10)

El Bogavante de Almirante (Calle Almirante 11. Tel. 91 532 18 50). The clue is in the name, which translates as the Admiral's Lobster. They specialise in fish and seafood, especially lobster, a delicacy that is served simply grilled or with rice.

Cafe de la "pera (Calle Arrieta 6. Tel. 91 542 63 82). Bel Canto enthusiasts will be in their element at the restaurant here. Every night, fake waiters burst into song performing some of the best pieces of international opera and Spanish operetta. It makes for a really fun evening out.

Nightspots Clubs Nightclubs

Binomio (Corredera Baja de San Pablo 26. Tel. 91 532 32 07). Since its opening two years ago, Binomio has gone for a deliberately kitsch style, with flashy decoration and lively cabaret-like atmosphere. Pacha Madrid (Calle Barcela 11. Tel. 91 442 60 42). Late-night disco that opens on Thursdays and Fridays from 11pm and Saturdays from midnight.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Madrid

Sales officially start on 15 January in Madrid, but shops start to display their best bargains from the end of December. This is the best time to buy Spanish shoes and leather goods. The best places to go are Princesa, Serrano and Fuencarral streets, and all around the Puerta del Sol Square.
