Travel From Faro Airport

COUNTRY CODE: Dial +351 for Portugal.

Faro Airport: 53 kilometers to the Spanish border in the east with the motorway and 113 to Cape St. Vincent in the west, part motorway.

Travel by Bus or Coach

Eva is the main service and stops outside the airport, taking passengers to various destinations. A 20-minute journey will take you to Faro, the capital of the Algarve. Tel. + 351 289 899 760

Travel by Taxi

Reasonably priced with fixed prices for long journeys, although these should be discussed before travel.

Travel by Car

Drivers should watch out for signs once they approach the motorway. Faro and Espanha (Spain) takes you to all points east and Lisbon, Portimao and Lagos to all points west.

Low Cost Cheap & Cheerful (Around a £10)

Restaurant Veneza (Mem Moniz, Ferreiras. Tel. 367 129). Away from the tourist scene, Veneza serves delicious Portuguese dishes. Cheap and very cheerful, it is the place to mingle with the locals . Enjoy chicken with chickpeas or grilled black pork.

Around £20

O Carlos (Between Benagil and Carvoeiro, Estalagem Vila Mar. Tel. 282 342 331). Dinner at the Captain's Table is to be savoured slowly, as everything is freshly prepared. Try rabbit with walnut sauce or a lobster cataplana (a sort of stew made in a special copper dish) with champagne. This place is ideal for connoisseurs of fine Portuguese cuisine.

Special Occasions

Aldar Morrocan (Hotel Sheraton, Falesia. Tel. 289 500 100). Not to be missed. Without crossing to Africa experience all the sumptuous pleasures of a Moroccan night. The food is carefully and artistically prepared and dishes like pigeon pastilla and chicken couscous take you on a voyage of scents and flavours.

Exclusive Restaurants

La Place (Vale de Lobo. Tel. 289 353 432). Gourmet French cuisine in wonderful surroundings. The menu is changed frequently, so patrons can try new dishes by Moroccan-born chef Maurice Belhaj and his wife. There's an excellent selection of French and Portuguese wines and the view alone is to be savoured.

Roundup (Carvoeiro. Tel. 282 357 009). Western- themed saloon with live guitar music played by Irish Dave. Very lively and lots of fun.

Nightspots Clubs Nightclubs

Capitulo 5 (Albufeira. Tel. 289 586 800). Fashionable and modern decor in an exclusive nightspot that likes to change its look every couple of years, so it consistently remains the most popular place to chill out. Entry is restricted to those aged 25 and over. Blackjack (Vilamoura. Tel. 289 389 147). Renowned as a haunt for sophisticated couples and famous for its Thursday singles' nights when girls get in for free, but not the guys.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Faro

The resorts of Vale de Lobo and Quinta do Lago, where many stars have second homes, are Places to Visit & See - Days Out - About if you want to mingle with the jetset. High- security protects them from prying eyes, but they have to eat and drink - so you may spot someone you know. It isn't very chic to ask for autographs, but it's nice to sit, watch and admire.
