Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Bristol
By day the Corn Street/Baldwin Street area, just off the main city centre, is the city's traditional commercial centre with the fascinating all-day, covered St Nicholas Market tucked away behind the stunning Georgian Corn Exchange. Check out the Elizbethan 'nails' in front of the Corn Exchange: these flat-topped metal columns were once used by corn merchants who tested the quality of the grains the farmers were offering and paid on the spot, hence the expression "paying on the nail". By night it's a completely different animal with packed clubs, pubs in converted commercial buildings, bistros, cafes and restaurants.
