Buses from Bilbao Airport

A bus runs to the city every 30 minutes and the 20-minute journey costs around ,1. Buses run between 6.40am and 10.30pm. Asador de Aranda (Tel. 94 443 06 64). Popular with meat lovers, this Castilian style asador serves generous portions of meat cooked over a charcoal grill. Try the speciality lamb dishes.

El Botxo (Camino de la Ventosa, 34. Tel. 94 400 81 00). This restaurant, housed inside the Hotal Hesperia Zubialde, is a popular choice for locals and tourists alike. Open daily for lunch and dinner, the restaurant prides itself on its modern take on traditional Basque dishes.

Rimbombim (Hurtado Amezaga, 48. Tel. 94 421 31 60). A real treat this. Rimbombim has been in business for more than 70 years and is excellent. Specialising in all kinds of fish and seafood dishes, depending on the season, it also offers clients an excellent selection of accompanying wines.

Bilborock (Muelle de la Merced 1. Tel. 94 415 13 06). A renovated church in the Old Quarters of Bilbao now with live rock music from up-and-coming local bands and international groups. There's no actual bar inside, so most people head for a drink before - and after - the concerts.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Bilbao

The most famous area within Bilbao's Old Quarters are the Siete Calles - Seven Streets. Numerous criss-crossing lanes divide the original seven streets into a labyrinth of pedestrianised walkways. More than 500 shops selling everything from trendy clothes to handmade Basque boinas (berets) along with traditional bars and restaurants serving endless varieties of mouth-watering tapas. Look out for examples of spectacular architecture, Arabic tiling and the Baroque Cathedral hidden well away from the hustle and bustle.
