Travel From Amsterdam Airport

Travel by Train Amsterdam Airport

Seven trains leave Schiphol airport every hour for Amsterdam's Centraal Station. Trains are fast, with a journey time of about 20 minutes. Tickets cost ,3.10 single and ,5.50 return. Check www.ns.nl for times and fares (there's an English version).

Travel by Car

Take the A4 towards Amsterdam from Schiphol, then the A10 ring road, following the Centrum signs into the city centre. The journey should take around 20 minutes.

Travel by Taxi

Walk out of the main terminal building and you'll see cabs straight ahead. Make sure the meter is switched on. Journeys into the centre shouldn't cost more than about ,35.

Cafe Bern (Nieuwmarkt 9. Tel. 622 0034). Indulge in sizzling entrecote steaks cooked at your table, rich and creamy cheese fondues (made to a secret recipe), fresh crispy salads and a delicious bottle of red. Cosy dining at its best.

Special Occasions

De Blonde Hollander (Leidsekruisstraat 28. Tel. 627 0522). Do like the locals and reserve a table. Dutch food may not win many awards, but this is a trendy- looking restaurant with helpful staff, serving up wholesome meals, large portions and plenty of Dutch charm.

Exclusive Restaurants

Altmann (Amsteldijk 25. Tel. 662 7777). Feast on scallops, oysters and dishes like black truffle risotto and Japanese noodle soup at this exclusive spot close to the Amstel. If you're feeling flash, book the VIP platform to make sure you can be seen.

Public Houses (Pubs)

Schiller Cafe (Rembrandtplein 26. Tel. 624 9846). Part of the Schiller Hotel, the dark and inviting art-deco bar is a lovely place to unwind over a brandy. Charming.

Live Entertainment Music

Mulligans (Amstel 100. Tel. 622 1330). Authentic folk singers perform most nights, Guinness flows freely and live football is obligatory, making this one of the most popular Irish bars in Amsterdam.

Nightspots Clubs Nightclubs

Casablanca (Zeedijk 26. Tel. 625 5685). This long- established Amsterdam favourite will have you grabbing for the mic in no time. Karaoke, magic, live acts and an amusingly surreal atmosphere make this a night to remember. Chocolate (1e Van der Helststraat 62-A. Tel. 675 7672). Another popular hang-out in the Pijp, where a young and trendy local crowd come to pose while sipping on cocktails in funky surroundings.

Places To Visit & See - Days Out - About Amsterdam

After extensive renovations, the Haarlemmerweg's new and improved Westergasfabriek Culture Park is open to visitors, although some work continues. There's a cinema, the West Pacific bar and restaurant, listed factory buildings, water lily ponds, newly-planted park, a lake and plenty of cultural activities planned for the year ahead.
